My computer is underperforming, especially when it comes to gaming in recent months. The CPU seems to struggle to perform to its ability, when i press ctrl+alt+del, i've noticed that when that the system idle process takes a big chunk of my CPU usage and hence affecting other program's performance. Can anyone explain what exactly is system idle processing, is there anyway to lower its usage on the CPU? Currrently im just running firefox and it's usage is 98%!?!

This only happened in recent months and not before. Could this possibly be a virus or spybots? I got an adware cleaner program and wiped a couple already.

Just for clarity, the first guy is right, second guy wrong. System Idle Process displays how much CPU is not in use, hence having it and 98% is fairly likely, it will usually be up around there since most of the time you are not using a lot of CPU. If you want further evidence, just leave the task manager open and run a bunch of programs. You should notice that the System Idel Process begins to approach zero as all the programs start using CPU, and then go back to 99 as all the programs finish using CPU. I am not really sure why you didn't notice it before the recent months, it has always been there.

as mystic and mack said the system idle process keeps track of UNUSED cpu time. However you may have a lot of things running in your task bar (right by the clock) this can slow down performance. try disabling some of the things your not using. Also your hard drive could need defragmenting. defrag it once and see if that helps. another thing that could help is more RAM. if you have lots of programs running in the background more RAM wil definantly help. I've also found that most spyware cleaners are only so good getting rid of stuff. go download the trial version of kaspersky anti virus it will find anything virii spyware adware and trojans.

You are reading that backwards. System idle shows the amount of CPU usage currently NOT in use.

98% means that 98% of your cpu is not in use.

equipment idle technique is could be at ninety 9% or one hundred% while not something is utilising reminiscence, it shows that the laptop is idle and not processing something Edit: yet while your cpu utilization placed on the backside of the window is ninety 9% or greater seem for a distinctive application different than equipment idle technique and terminate it

Could be a virus. Check the task manager again and see if it is running programs that you know that you don't have. Try and get a virus program.
