no, just smart consumers.
i give top preference to local businesses where i know the owners, or know their families. or the ones where the owners personally stop by your table because they really care how much you like it.
i find quirky locals have the best, most interesting food.
like in the south, all those family-owned bbq joints? AMAZING!
we have a ton of Thai restaurants here, and a lot of good vegan options that could not exist as national chains.

Not snobs.
I love trying new food in one-off mom-'n-pop joints.
I figure they started an eating place for a reason. If they were following their passion, they probably have a unique or special take on the way things are done.
There's a black owned restaurant in Bakersfield called J's Place, and it's very down to earth and the food is great albeit little on the spicy side. There's a Roach Coach on the edge of town just west of the freeway on 7th Standard road that has the world's best tacos. There's a barbecue joint in the heart of town that is a very old unrestored Victorian era quasi-mansion that plays N'awlins music and serves bad food and cheap drinks all day long. There's a French Louisiana restraunt at White lane east of Stine that serves alligator tail, crawdads, frog legs and other food associated with the deep south. It was tasty, but I got sick as a dog . . . but I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
My wife and I did alot of motorcycle riding when we were dating and ate in alot of real dives, but had some very good food. Like the "diner" in Long Beach on PCH that had the worlds best grits.
You have to go to Indio east of Palm Springs during the date festival in February. I never knew there were so many different kinds of dates.
Life is an adventure, and it's too short to eat at McDonald's every day.

They may prefer local because local restaurants are more individual, instead of the cookie cutter "chain" places. They might have more local, speciality dishes that aren't made elsewhere.
Local places are also more likely to know the people and likes better, and give the place a more "home" feel.
I sometimes like chain restaurants becuase it's nice to know you can get certain food almost anywhere in the US. Doesn't mean I dont want to have some food that has a more local flavor.

They aren't snobs. They simply prefer excellent food with a creative menu and a certain level of ambiance you don't get at a chain.
The only time I go to a chain restaurant is when I am traveling on business to a remote location, like Tracey, CA. Then I have no choice, the chain restaurants are the best eateries out there.

The act of liking local restaurants more than chains does not make you a snob, but most people who hold this opinion are incredibly pretentious/snobby about it. And to one of the other responders, all restaurants care about profit and food cost. Non-chains just take a different approach.

No, I think they are trying to give the locals some business. That's a nice way of doing it. Local restaurants would probably do the cooking better than a chain restaurant.

Say Hi to Mr. Snob #1, second to none. ME!!
The local establishments are not going by some old dumb Prestigious college books. These are down, home town people who know you by name. The big restaurants know you by number. The national chains don't keep people long enough to learn your name or theirs. The locals are the people you grew up with.

no, not necessisarily, maybe they just want to support local businesses! Some of those ppl might be foodies, but I dont think that that means that someone is a snob in general. Also, local restaurants will be more likely to have healthier things (in most cases)

I prefer local restaurants for a few reasons. First, I like the different food choices. Next, I like the idea of supporting a local business. Finally, as I get older - I'm thirty now - I find I like to eat without the clamor of small children around me, and there are fewer of them at local eateries.

Sometimes, but not always. A lot of time, they just happen to know where the good food is. One of my favorite restaurants is a local place, but I do go to chain eateries too.
