I want to make a ball out of a bouncy material, baseball sized. I don't want to just buy one; I want to make it. I want the ball to have a solid core and with a good amount of mass, like the Pinky bouncy balls. Can you describe the material and method of making my own ball? I have limited tools to use (no casts/molds, no engine lathes, etc). Thanks a bunch!

The rubber band ball was lots of fun, but I need to explain more; dropping the ball on a hardwood floor should not have the potential to hurt the floor (or skepticism thereof). I'm going to try the rubber cement idea.

Also, when I said "solid core", I did not mean hard; the core just has to be filled. I was trying to eliminate inflated balls from the suggestions. Sorry for the confusion. Great answers so far!

I've remade the rubber band ball, this time with just rubber bands, no golf ball, and ot bounces much better, but is still iffy. I am anxious to try the rubber cement idea.

RUBBER CEMENT!!!!

Buy a bottle of it and smear it onto a smooth surface then take your hand and roll it up. We used to do this way back when I was in school, It really works! they bounce really well.

WOW! thanks for the great memory!

My approach would be to make a ball of rubber bands, then coat it with rubber cement, then more rubber bands, then more rubber cement, etc. That doesn't give you a solid core, though, so this isn't 100% right. I'll think about it.

Later: good answers from Meli ("Rubber Cement!") and the two people who suggested starting with a marble. Better than my idea, I admit.

ummm...take a marble and wrap rubber bands around it until you reach the size that you want. And then dip it in a bowl of rubber cement. not sure if it works but it sounds fun......oh and let it dry.
