If he doesn't want you to do that, you'll just have to live with it. He's an individual with his own likes and dislikes, and he's not a baby any more. If you want something that has no right or desire to resist being hugged and kissed, get a dog.

Oh yes, it's scary, the great parental dicotamy. We bring our children up encouraging healthy growth and development and then are terrified when we realise we've done a great job and they're growing up. No there's no going back. Embrace this new stage in his development, enjoy it. He's not a little boy anymore, he's become the wonderful young man you always hoped he would be. Well done.

About 14 he will realize you are OK to be close to. He wants to be independant and let him, but be sure to remember he is still 12 and be ready to pull the reigns as a Mom would who is raising a young man. Ya Mine turned 15 and the daughters 20. get used to it. It's permanent

WELL HON I CAN EMPATHIZE WITH YOU.
ITS NOT EASY TO LET GO.
BUT ITS SOMETHING YOU WILL HAVE TO DO OTHERWISE HE WILL RESENT YOU FOR IT AND REBELL.
HE IS JUST GETTING TO KNOW HIMSELF, AND OF COURSE THERE IS THAT DREADED PEER PRESSURE. JUST EXPLAIN THINGS TO HIM.
THIS IS WHERE HE WILL LEARN TO BE RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL.
YOU MUST CUT THE STRINGS BUT DON'T SEVER THEM ALL TOGETHER, BECAUSE THERE WILL BE TIMES HE WILL NEED THEM.
GIVE HIM SOME SLACK , HES BECOMING INDEPENDENT WHICH IS WHAT YOU WANT.
GIVE HIM SLACK BUT LET HIM KNOW YOUR THERE FOR HIM AT ANY TIME AND LET HIM KNOW ITS SAFE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT ANYTHING GOOD OR BAD,AND HE WILL COME TO YOU WHEN HE NEED YOU.
TRUST ME HE WILL NEED YOU FOR QUITE A WHILE STILL.
FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE JUST IN A DIFFERENT WAY.
YOU NOT LOSING HIM REMEMBER THAT.
GOOD LUCK HOPE THIS HELPS.
