Take a look at his room, if he has posters/already has cds of certain bands, then go to the record store and look for cds from the same band that he dosnt already own.

How about talk to your son... I know its a lost art but it is called communication! If you want to find out on the sly, ask him if he likes the new one by some band or group....
Or just take a stab at it by how he dresses and words he uses. If he loves to use slang terms then he probably likes Hip Hop. If you constantly see crack cause his pants are below his butt... rap. If he wears his hair long.... hard rock to heavy metal. If he has his hair in dreads, get him some Bob Marley... see where I am going with this?

without being too specific, you run the risk of buying a cd he already has.or tipping him off if its supposed to be a surprise. this is a little impersonal but maby a gift card.its kindof better because i think the ones at best buy you can use online and the selection is better than in store in case he likes stuff thats kindof hard to find.as for t-shirts you get the best ones at shows.otherwise yea just ask.luck

You may just want to ask him, see what's on his iTunes, or ask for a wish list.

ask him!!! it's that easy.
he doesn't really share anything with you but it also sounds like maybe you have the problem communicating.
