That's tricky, because there are many things that affect your download speed, the most important of which are:
* The method you're using to download (i.e. is it your browser, or BitTorrent, or an instant messenger, etc)
* The point that you are trying to download from.
See, it's not just your connection to the Internet that affects your download speed, although the capacity of your connection will act as the final "choke". It's also the speed by which the source of your download connects to the Internet, and the number of people sharing that connection. And if you're downloading using peer-to-peer (e.g. Gnutella) or BitTorrent then you're not downloading from a single source, but from many sources, each of which will have their own restrictions on connection speed.
Here's a useful little tool which will allow you to find out how fast your computer connects to the Internet: http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html
But as for your individual download speeds, you'll have to rely on the tools you're using for downloads to tell you. Normally if you're downloading with a browser or a P2P client, something will tell you the particular speed in kb/s of that particular download.

On mine, there are 2 icons down rh corner by the clock that tell me abt the internet connection. One is 2 lil computers when I'm connected they flash - its not that. The other is a modem icon mine is a green triangle but yours will probably be different - if I double click that a window comes up telling me my upload and download speeds. Look for what program runs your modem and it will be somehere in there.
Btw - most lines are between 1 and 2 MB. If you are paying for an 8Mb link read the small print first - it says "up to 8mb- variable". You are paying BT to install the next generation of lines - when they feel like getting around to it.

it should tell you on th modem the max speed for download. a 56kb modem has a max 56 k capability. when you are actually doing a download, you will see the estimated download time and the speed of the download in kb on the download window showing the progress of the download. most modems are 56 k bytes per second, but the actual speed for the download will vary with the type of internet connection you are using. cable and dsl are faster than regular phone lines. cable is usually faster than most dsl's. you can tell the difference when you actually watch the progress of the download since it is shown in a small on-screen box.
