Sort of. We had a secretary of war & a Secretary of the navy through WW II. In the major reorganization, we combined all military into the Dept of Defense headed by the Secretary of Defense, Under him are the Secretaries of the Army, Navy & Air Force.

With the development of Nuclear weapons, no real war was thought to be winnable (Mutually Assured Destruction: MAD) and so the strategic defensive was changed to reflect a political and economic world in which maneuvering our forces wouldn't lead to actual war, but would lead instead to securing strategic natural resources.

Yes they are the same office. The Department of Defense was formerly called the Department of War.

Seriously - Secretary of War was just my sarcastic reference to Donald Rumsfeld two weeks ago! I bet he read it and resigned shortly thereafter. NOT! Obviously he resigned because he knew of the existence of the bi-partisan special panel on our unnecessary invasion of Iraq.
P.S. Republicans - please be more selective of your candidates in 2008.

Yes they are. The name change was a 1940's example of political correctness. We in the U,S.A. don't make war, we do defend ourselves though. Yeah right!

It was changed to the secratary of defense after WWII, Literally, I belive- To make the country sound "Softer" as we had just kicked butt.
