One can stand out from the crowd and show independence of thinking by not only refusing to participate in moronic rites of passage, but also by forging one's own path. Example: Don't get drunk this weekend because that's "what everyone's" doing, but instead learn to clog (or whatever) with someone else who also is a free thinker.

True independence is doing what is right for you, without purposely hurting others, even though there doesn't seem to be anyone around who truly understands.

When you don't follow the crowd... like while some of my ex-friends are sleeping around and doing "it" in public, I stay at home and read a good book.
