Yes i think you need it or at least a major change. Americas health care system is terrible. yes free heath care does put a large drain on the system but is that so bad? American can easily afford it. Also yes it does work Britain's system isn't going well cos its under funded and over used theres would be greatly improved with a national id card so not just anyone can use it. Denmark and Canada have free health care and theres work fine. Most European and western country's have cheaper health care the government support people.

everyone has the right to live, not only the rich!

We do need a better system but socialized medicine is NOT the way. Look at Canada, England and other places that have it in place. you can easily die waiting for treatment. The hospitals are a nightmare.

Edit: To vl2150, I watched my Father in Law as he lay dying in a hospital in the U.K. If he were in the U.S., he´d probably been helped. He lay in a bed in a row of about 15 and there were were another 15 or so on the other side. Tattered blanked and dirty curtains. When it was lunch time a ¨nurse¨rolled by with a cart and practically threw a sandwich on the bed. Is that what working well is?

No.
I have worked my *** off for what I have. I have lived without insurance. I have lived with insurance that has taken half of my check so I could get my children taken care of. I currently have insurance and I continue to pay for it.
Assuming that a government run healthcare system would work is among the most blue sky projects ever thought of. All you have to do is look at medi-care and you will see what our government is capable of.
Just in case your liberal mind thinks I don't care about others health and welfare you should see how my free time is spent.
Please don't burden me with more taxes.

Yes, or we need reasonable and affordable medical insurance that the individuals can afford.
Maybe something in the middle. But health care should not be on the fringes of the more financially fortunate only.

What about Unions or groups of large people who could atleast be given the buying power of a large corporation to get medical insurance. For example, why not have every licensing board have the people they represent be included in a large group plan, no matter who they might work for.

Yes! Health is not a privilege and the rich should not have better healthcare just because they can afford it.

A friend of my family died of a heart attack at a young age; he didn't go to a doctor because he didn't have insurance. I think that if the U.S. had universal healthcare, people in similar situations would be much better off.

The problem is that people like to care about others, but we like it even more when all it costs is voting for the right person.
If you really care about helping people with no health care, then volunteer to lend a hand at a local free clinic, donate to charities and churches that offer medical services to the poor.
When those who want to help reach out to those who need it and help is provided, it is infinitely more noble than when it is paid for out of the state coffers through forcibly collected funds, and executed by bureaucrats.
If everyone who supported government health care gave 2% of their income to charities that provided health care to the poor, no one would go without.
Currently we kind of do have free health care, at least for emergencies, they are called emergency rooms. The question is not if one can get health care, the question is how much can a politician take credit for increasing.

I'm beginning to think we need something better than we currently have.....the trick is to have universal healthcare without raising taxes so much......otherwise we'll be headed towards socialism where we pay an enormous amount of taxes.

yes. there are too many Americans without health care. shouldn't happen in a country like ours. I don't understand why people who oppose it call it free health care that is paid for by taxes. they don't want it because that don't want to pay taxes on it. Are these people not paying any health insurance premiums now/??? if the tax increase is less than the decrease for not paying ins. premiums, I am all for it.

We probably need it now because illegal aliens get it for free and the rest of us cannot afford it. I am so frustrated being a citizen of this country. I pay taxes taxes taxes and get nothing in return. The government pisses it away and keeps on taking.

Yes, we lag behind other countries considering the amount of taxes we pay. The trick would be for us to insure US and not all of Mexico.
