Twice in the last six months I've come home to find my internet running. I have dial-up and always disconnect before leaving the house. I live with my elderly parents who have no clue how to use the internet, so it's not someone else in the house. I have Norton security on my computer and it checks out fine. The internet log always shows the time the internet was dialed up as a time when I wasn't there. All in all, this is a little scary to me.

Most likely, what is going on is that your Internet connection is set to dial automatically when an Internet resource is requested. If this is the case, then there is probably a program on your computer that is requesting information from the Internet periodically. When it does so, your ISP automatically gets dialed, and you know the rest.

To fix this, just change your connection settings so that the computer won't dial unless you explicitly tell it to.

Yes, it can dial up by its itself. Any program that is set to do automatic updates can tell the ISP to come on. One way could be Norton trying to check for automatic updates. Automatic Check for Windows update too. A good way around this would be to create an easy way to unplug the phone line from the computer. Or turn off your computer when not in use.

It could be Nortons software doing it, checking for an update to download. When you normally want to get on the Internet, does you dial up connection automatically pop up and connect? If so, then when Norton's checks automatically for an update, the dialer will respond. Rummage through Norton's to see if "check for updates automatically is enable," might be under Options or Properties. Chow

sounds like you have some type of spyware on your pc ...some program is wanting to connect to the internet so its automatically dialling up
you can stop it by going into your Internet Properties then Connections then select Never Dial A Connection..then create a shortcut on your Desktop to your ISP that you have to then click onto in order for the dial up to happen
run all your spyware removal progs regularly too and keep your AV software up to date

do you have password saved in there? if yes, cancel it.

try running Internet Explorer with dial-up off, and see if it will dial up. If yes, I bet there's a setting somewhere in connection properties that says "auto-connect".
