It was contested by Algore because he believed the exit polls and thereby thought he should win. He lost in all eight recounts of the vote by eight big-city newspapers. The Supreme Court told the Florida Supreme Court to cut the crap and let all votes in all counties be counted, instead of just the votes in the four heavily-Democrat counties that Algore needed to win. Algore's strategy was to count the votes only where he knew he'd win and exclude the votes where he knew he'd lose. Only a power-hungry Democrat would think like that...

Very good question. This is one that has been distorted laughingly by the Democrats. The votes were recounted and Al Gore wanted only specific counties counted but not others. The Republicans said count them all. Counts were done over and over. Al Gore would not be satisfied until he won. He was a very poor sport and made the entire Democrat party look foolish. Also, the people that complained about not understanding how to vote were always Democrats. These were mostly senior citizens that typically vote in their home northern states and also down where they live in Florida. The standard joke about these people was that they could watch 8 bingo cards at a time perfectly but could not understand a simple ballot- ridiculous!

The forces fielded by Bush and Company were taking advantage of unwritten rules and unregulated procedures, and they know exactly what they were doing. The result was going to be a Constitutional Crises but the Supreme Court stepped in and stopped the count so that settled the issue before our major Institutions were weaken or destroyed, but the Justices also made it clear that the decision they made was not a precedence for any other decision or case.

In retrospect - Al Gore IS the winner considering the mess Bush got us in to.
