I believe that I would trust Major Winchester to operate on me, much more than Frank Burns, but Frank Burns offered so much more comic relief to the show as "The All American Hypocrite" and "Ultra-Conservative Baffoon". Major Winchester, added a more emotional vehicle for the show, as he was the well educated, cultured, and dedicated humanitarian doctor.

Major Winchester. He has always been a bit smarter. Burns always messed things up. They would always put him in charge and next thing you know everyone is locked up. Winchester was a jerk but he still had brains. He was always reading.

If it can't be one of the captains, I'd much rather have Major Charles Emerson Winchester the third operate on me. He actually seemed to know what he was doing and didn't have to ask for help every two minutes.
Besides, I don't think I could trust anyone nicknamed Ferret Face

Winchester hands DOWN. He was arrogant, self absorbed, rude and overly refined, but he was a GOOD doctor. And he had a heart but he didn't want anyone to know. But Burns... I wouldn't let Burns anywhere near me. He was the same man that would lay in his cot and read the bible but then go cheat on his wife with Margret!

Winchester's weak spot was his ego. He knew how good he was. Burns is probably like many doctors, more concerned with his investments than with his patients' well-being. Unlike Burns, Winchester actually got the better of Hawkeye and BJ once in a while. "Charles you're drinking your hair." "Don't be absurd, it's twelve year old scotch. I couldn't leave it in its bottle around you petty larcenists." "BJ, we've been drinking Charles's hair."
