Three sisters register at a hotel and are told that their rooms will cost $10 each so they pay $30. Later the clerk realizes that he made a mistake and should only have charged them $25. He gives a bellboy $5 to return to them but the bellboy gives himself a $2 tip giving the sisters only $1 each. So the sisters actually spent $27 and the bellboy kept $2 - what happened to the other dollar of the original $30?

Most of you will say that the clerk has $25 dollars, the three sisters each have $1, and the bellboy has $2. but if you look at it trhough the sisters perspective they payed $10 each got back $1 making it $9 dollars each. So they actually paid $27 (because $9 dollars times 3 sisters= $27) but the sisters dont know that the room only cost $25 dollars, but if they paid $27 and the bellboy took $2(making the total $29) what happened to the other dollar????

You miscalculated. I fhte bellboy takes $2 as tip there will be $3 left. $25(the fee of the room) + $2 (the tip) + $3 The money the sisters get back) = $30

You just made a slight miscalculation.

The $2 that the bellboy kept was out of the total $27 that the sisters paid. The room actually cost $25, plus the bellboy stole $2, so the sisters paid 25 + 2 or $27. They originally paid $30 and got $3 back, so paid $27.

There is no missing dollar. The bellboy gave back each sister a dollar and kept 2 for himself. Altogether that is 5 dollars.

Yes, They paid 27 dollar in total. 9 Dollar for each sister.

But, you don't add two dollars to 27, you subtract.

27 - 2 = 25

There too many varibles to put it into a equation but just understand that girls don't have any money. They are getting money back that they already lost. So think negative.

-30 +3 = -27

and had the bellboy given back the 2 dollar to the girls. The girls would've had 5 dollars back in total.

So -27 + 2 = -25

See no dollar lost =P

and the moral of the story is..........don't trust bellboys lol

I think you are approaching this problem all wrong, or you taking 2 different ways of looking at this situation and jam them into one to confuse everyone.

There are two ways to look at this:

ONE way of looking at this problem is as follow:
The room cost $25, the bellboy tips himself $2 and he has $3 left to return to the three sisters. $25 + $2 + $3 = $30

SECOND way of looking at this problem:
They actually only spent a net of $27. $25 of that went to the hotel and $2 went to the bellboy . . again, it adds up

Be careful you are subtracting the appropriate amounts to get the desired result.

There are thirty dollars here total
The clerk has $25
The bellboy has $2
The sisters have $3

The sisters paid $27, the bellboy took $2 of this, leaving the clerk with $25.

Its a trick question each sister paid 8.33 for the room and was robbed .67 cents each by the bell boy.

25/3 = 8.33

2/3 = .67

you will notice that 8.33 * 3 = 24.99 and .67 = 2.01
