.

The answer is quiet simple.

Virus - a program or file that may cause damage to your computer's files, resources, etc.

Spam - some mails or files which has been sent to you by unknown users with out any reason. For eg. if you are using mail servers, you could get unwanted mails from unknown users, which may be an advertisement or something like that. But they will may not have virus.

Virus : A computer virus is a computer program written to alter the way a computer operates, without the permission or knowledge of the user. Though the term is commonly used to refer to a range of malware, a true virus must replicate itself, and must execute itself. The latter criteria are often met by a virus which replaces existing executable files with a virus-infected copy. While viruses can be intentionally destructive—destroying data, for example—some viruses are benign or merely annoying.

Spam : Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spam costs the sender very little to send -- most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or the carriers rather than by the sender.

There are two main types of spam, and they have different effects on Internet users. they are UseNet Spam, and Email Spam

Spam:-

Headers are often forged to defy the user into opening the message and read it.
A false unsubscribe link, which realistically verifies a valid email address and spammers will add to a database of "good email addresses".
Spammers continue to ignore the law and users' requests to be removed. Spammers have also found ways around spam filters making it more difficult to filter their messages out.
Dictionary spamming techniques are commonly used. Once a spammer knows of a domain (i.e. dartmouth.org) they randomly place names before the "@" sign usually going through letters of the alphabet such as "andy@dartmouth.org, amanda@dartmouth.org, arnold@dartmouth.org, and so on". In this scenario they also use the BCC field so users cannot see it is a dictionary attack and think they are receiving messages that aren't even addressed to them.
Spam usually does not cause harm to a users' computer.

Virus:-
Headers are also forged but usually headers are generated by the virus after infecting a users' computer and stealing an email address from the users' address book.
There is no unsubscribe link. But sometimes the message appears to come from a trusted source such as "staff@dartmouth.org" or "microsoft@microsoft.com".
Virus protection is the main source for combat. Spam filters do not necessarily pick up on virus generated messages. Dartmouth has both virus scanners and spam filtering scanning inbound messages.
Viruses may use a dictionary technique as well until it starts collecting valid addresses, then it uses direct attacks based on information it gathers from infected computers.
Viruses do intend to cause harm, usually on a more global front. I.E. slowing down networks to a crawl, denial of service attacks on websites, etc.

the difference is:
Spam is:
E-mail spam is a subset of spam that involves sending nearly identical messages to a few or thousands (or millions) of recipients by E-mail. Perpetrators of such spam ("spammers") often harvest addresses of prospective recipients from Usenet postings or from web pages, obtain them from databases, or simply guess them by using common names and domains.

There is no universally accepted definition of spam, but most definitions are based on the e-mail being both unsolicited by the recipients and having bulk quantities of substantively the same e-mail being sent. In other words spam is usually defined as Unsolicited Bulk E-mail (UBE). This e-mail is usually also unwanted and sent by automated means

while viruses are:

Viruses are programs that come embedded with some web sites which u may be trying to download through your browser. It will disable the normal controls of your computer system.
SPAM or unsolicited E-mail messages are sent in plenty either to one of the user or sent to many even if the users dont want to see those messages. Here the sender in most cases does not disclose his return address but gives someone else's and that particular poor guy gets caught for nothing.a word of caution:do not unsubscribe even if u did not subscribe to any mailing lists bcause unsubscribing messges come regular even if u r not a member of that mailing list.by unsubscribing you are showing your email address and related information to the sender..Its a tactics.Best is do not reply to those messages.
You can create Filters and autoreplies that enable your spamguard and the flag in your filter will be set if the e-mail message headers match with the wordings u have set in the stationery files in your filter and either those messages will be deleted on redirected to some other folder.
Viruses are much more complicated and they can destroy any level of security features u have in your computer system.
I hope this will be of some help to you.
