Before the age of Mass Transit when life was much slower and simpler roads were not the major priority. The land around it was. The road was simply a means to get there no matter how long it took.
I recently took a trip along a section of the old Route 66. I immediately understood it's appeal. I experienced hidden treasures I never would have seen on the Major Freeways.

Because people had already built their homes and businesses there before there were roads.
They, consequently were not built in a strait line.
Therefore, when the road crews arrived many years later, they had to wind them around to pass by all the building structures to be of any use to the people who lived there.

cuz it's more fun to drive your car around in the country, lots of scenery to be seen than in the city. They're not in such a hurry like in the city either

cause they all know where they're going anyway - they head past the watertower & turn where the Haney place USED TO BE, and go down a spell more, past the Shamrock station, over the RR tracks....

It actually costs less to go around obstacles than to build over them. Besides... it's a lot of fun to go flying around curves :o)
