www = world wide web.

Technically, we can use another term if we want - internet! If you're referring to the www in web adresses, we can change that too - look at the address for this site. instead of www.yahoo.com, it would say answers.yahoo.com. Many sites do similar - for instance, livejournal replaces the www with the name of the blogger - username.livejornal.com

World wide web. You never need the www, in fact, it's considered a subdomain. Normally, a website is sold as yahoo.com, but the www.yahoo.com 'www' subdomain is added to it. The reason for using this is because you can have a domain without it being on the web. Of course, this isn't done much anymore, but it was used in older computer times.

Actually if you look up at your address bar right now it should say http://answers.yahoo.com, so we already do use something else AND you don't have to put www every time...you can just put google.com and it should go to google without the www...and www stands for world wide web...or that's what I was told....

World Wide Web. And you can use anything you want if you set up your own dns for your own domain. "www." isn't necessary at all.

It stands for World Wide Web. You dont have to use it and in most countries they have never used it.
