In the practice I work in, 2/3rds of all polyps we remove are the type called: Adenomatous. These are the kinds of polyps that can turn cancerous, usually as they grow bigger than 6mm. The other types are called Hyperplastic. Unless you have large, or numerous hyperplastic polyps, the risk for colon cancer is small. The adenomatous polyps can grow back, so once you are found with them, you will be asked back at least every 5 years to have another check.

Removal of polyps is fairly routine but to be certain they are not malignant, specimens are submitted to a pathologist for his examination of the tissue. We remove polyps to prevent problems, more than any other reason. Because of the friable nature of the polyps, they sometimes bleed and cause worry and a bit of discomfort (depending on location)...as nasal polyps cause respiratory difficulties. Most polyps are benign.

Usually this is a very simple procedure and you'll have nothing to worry about. However, watch for any large amount of bleeding or if he develops a fever. Also, make sure he is pain free. If the doctor did not prescribe something for pain, and he complains of pain, call the hospital or clinic immediately and they can call in a prescription to your pharmacy.

And as already stated, wait for the results of the biopsy, which in most cases come out normal.

Polyps can easily be benign. Don't worry until you get the results of the biopsy. Even then most colon cancer can be cured.
