Look at it this way, everyone has different situations, personalities, colleges so everyone should have different experiences. Dorms are usually good for proximity and social connections so good for freshmen. If you move on campus especially on a non-commuter campus, there's a pretty high fun factor.
Whatever you do, try to work a balance, be focused after all at the end of the day it's all about that degree. Don't buy into the notion that you have to be drunk everyday to have fun in college, there is a lot more; and just the pleasure of interacting with your peers in a college environment is probably priceless.

Dorm life is fun, and a way to meet people.

But, if you can live free or much cheaper off-campus or at home, then do that. There's no sense in dropping excessive amounts of money on a dorm if you have low cost or free choices. However, if it'll cost you nearly the same to live in an off-campus apartment as it would a dorm, consider a dorm in that case.

Dorm life is one of the important parts of going to school. Learning to live with someone else, sharing a bathroom, having loud neighbors, etc is something all students should experience. I only lived in the dorms for one year, but it was one of the most educational experiences I had in college. The best aspects of my year in the dorms were the support system you had built in for being away from home for the first time. None of us had all of the skills necessary to live on our own, but we learned to lean on each other. I would highly recommend it.

I would definately say dorm, the college I go to doesn't have dorms and it means that everyone leaves immediatly after class so you only really talk to the people in your classes who are only there for one semester, and it's very depressing to say "yes I go to college but the only person I know there is the guy with the guitar, and I don't know his name"

dorm life is great. I mean there are things that I don't like, but you just get to meet a lot of people, and have a good time.

depends if the college student is more social or not. you get invited to a lot less parties when you don't live in a dorm, but you're also less pressured to drink or do something danerously stupid. live in dorms if you're more concerned about you social life; dont, if academics is more important.

I agree with many universities who require freshmen to live on campus in the dormatories for the first year of school. It is important to meet other students, and get involved.

I know it costs a little more money, but you are in a safe environment without the registered sex offender down the street.
