When I was in second grade I had to attend a special class in order to be able to make a "th" sound. Not laziness. If you write "dat" instead of "that", it's a spelling mistake.

the fricative Th is pronounced sometimes as d because of the rapid and casual speech especially in the USA .this is not laziness or mistake ,rather it is casuality in speech that may not block understanding of the word if the listener is aware of it.
Note that the mispronunciation of th or any other SOUND-not letter-is a pronunciation mistake rather than a spelling mistake.

It's usually done purposefully... neither laziness nor a spelling mistake, but a way youths create distance and difference between themselves and older generations. In a sense, a way to be unique and "cool".

According to some linguists, in certain dialects, the "d" sound may be native to the speaker but the "th" sound is not. So some speakers may associate or substitute "d" for "th." Once a regional dialect is started, it may be imitated and adopted by others.

This is similar to how some native Mexican Spanish speakers may substitute "b" and "v" etc.

While sending messages through mobiles or even computers 'th' is replaced by 'd' to save time as well as space. When one is in a hurry, one can use'd' instead of 'the' or 'dat' instead of 'that'.
