A business meeting where a group of people talk and there is a phone there, set on speaker phone.
A person or people from another location can participate in the meeting even though they are not there in person.

It's usually handled over the phone. A group of people have a number to dial into, with one of those people being the moderator. Everyone dials the number and enters their code given to them by the moderator, but the moderator dials the number and enters their own code. Once the moderator is there the audio conference starts (basically called a "conference call"). From there the moderator can mute everyone's line, but each individual can mute and unmute themselves with a certain number sequence.
