the government helps! There are organizations that will help. In the end it is the responsibility of the parent!

You need to contact the dept. of health and welfare in your city and ask them what medical insurance programs they offer for low income families and what you need to do to apply for them. Depending on the expense involved with a child with serious medical issues the child can be taken away. I knew a low income woman who gave birth to a baby and the state paid for the birth but the baby's internal organs were on the outside of the body and the surgery and the after care total was going to be over a certain amount of money and because the mom couldnt pay for any of that the state paid for it but then took the baby and it was later adopted by a family who could help pay for some of that bill. Each state will vary though so look into it.

If a child is involved, there is assistance available through Medicare/Medicaid. If you have no children, you are pretty much on my own.

I recently had my gall bladder removed. AFTER insurance, I still owe $3,350! I can't afford it and the hospital is suing me. I have to apply for (and be denied for) medicaid, and after that, the hospital considers a limited payment plan (they otherwise won't accept less than a few hundred per month). If you are between 21 and 65 and NOT pregnant, the government won't cover you, but if the bill is for a child, it may.

If you are in this position, I strongly suggest contacting social services. Also, you must apply for help within 90 days of the hospital visit.
