I know a lot of people say 'Black Sabbath' was, but I guess it depends on what you consider 'heavy metal' . They were pretty much the first heavy metal band, but a band to have first done a heavy metal SONG might be from a band called 'Blue Cheer' or 'Steppenwolf'.
My husband's in my ear saying zeppelin was. I don't consider them heavy metal but whatever.

Well heavy metal has evolved over the years. Although you may see it as classic rock or blues infused rock back in their hay day Led Zeppelin was seen to be heavy metal. I tell my hard core metal fan friends and they just look at me like I'm speaking gibberish. Then a little band known as Black Sabbath came around and reinvented heavy metal to pretty much what we know it as today.
Oh and for the record Tony Iommi lost his middle and ring finger on his right hand in a sheet metal factory where he worked as a teenager. This affected his fretting hand because he's left handed. There was nothing about a car.

The first band to introduce power chords... due to a disfiguring car accident of the left hand, guitarist Toni Iomi had two finger tips replaced with prosthetic plastic tips which only allowed him to play power chords which resulted in a low-end, dark and heavy sound. Along with Ozzy's dark, horror movie lyrical imagery touching on subjects never before dared to be mentioned in music, yet alone socially.... gave them an eternal cult following. Bill Ward's drumming technique was many years ahead of his time, stepping away from the traditional 4/4 beat and infusing constant intricate rudimentary fills and off beats, to this day is hardly matched.
This may be just my opinion, but I don't think it can be disputed. The answer is the almighty

Black Sabbath. They were the first to come out with that unique sound that makes metal...metal. They created it and have mastered it .
