depends how mechanically inclined you are. You will need sockets (with extensions probably) and a wrench set, some ramps or a good floor jack WITH jack stands to enable you to move freely under the vehicle. Never use a jack without jack-stands, or at least throw a full size spare tire under both front wheels, too many people get killed when the jack slips. And when ever you work on an electrical component DISCONNECT the battery before you start, I know it sound foolish but it only takes a second to reset all your preset radio stations and you have piece of mind.
One other piece of advice- go to your local auto part shop and look at their repair manual that is just for your car(there will be a hundred to pick out of) it will take you down through the steps pretty nicely and they don't care how long you look at it and read, as a matter of fact they encourage it in most auto stores or you can buy it for under $20 and it will teach you to fix everything on your car (including preventive maintenance, how much oil to put in when changing the oil, at what interval to change what. . . Haynes makes one book and there is another I can't think of right now. Anyways good luck, not much harder than changing a tire just a lot harder of a position to work on it.

The starter may be the most difficult thing that is possible to do yourself at home.

It requires getting underneath the car while it's jacked up and supported by jack stands, you'll get filthy dirty, you'll have to deal with nuts & bolts that are almost impossible to reach, and you may find yourself only able to turn them 1/8 of a turn at a time.

If you decide to take on this task, be sure to remember where the wires came off.

It is well worth the $100 labor the mechanic will charge you.

You'll find out.

Sure,
Get a Haynes manual for your car and follow the instructions. you need to know where to look but the manual will give you what you need.
You will also need a set of Metric and SAE sockets. A screwdriver set, and a set of Box open ended wrenches. I always use those latex gloves to keep the hands clean from the oil and grease.
The best way to learn to do minor repairs is start and don't worry about goofing it up...You have directions

The simple answer is no. The complex answer is yes if you don't mind having your car unuseable for a couple weeks and are mechanically inclined. You can the repair manuals that technicians use for around $200 on the internet. But all things considered, by the time you do that it's better to have a professional do it.

They are pretty tough. Get a good book on car repair for YOUR car since all starters are different. Even with a good book, it's a chore.
