Versed is used just to start the procedure of putting a person "out". Versed suppresses the central nervous system--kind-of a general relaxer, making one sleepy, such as during a colonoscopy. The more potent medications like a combo of Benadryl and Demerol are then given.

The answer really depends on whether you are having a general or local anesthetic.

Some commonly used medications for general anesthesia are propofol (Diprivan) and etomidate (Amidate), among many others.

In a minor procedure, the physician will generally give you a pain reliever (such as fentanyl) and midazolam (Versed). The midazolam causes some short term memory loss, to make you forget what you went through.

While there are some common drugs that are used, typically a doctor will review your chart to see what drugs, if any, that you are currently taking to ensure there won't be any counteractions with any sedatives or anethesia he wants to use. All doctors have there own preference as to what they use. Typically, the surgeon will schedule what's called a "walk-through" appointment in which he will explain what going to happen before, during, and after the surgery and he will or should ask you if you have any questions or concerns....that would be the perfect time to ask about what he plans on using.

A little versed, fentanyl, and/or demerol do a great job for most folks. I went under in seconds when they did my colonoscopy.
