The x- and y-components of a velocity vector of 100 N at 240 degrees would be what?
I know it is
50 N, 86.6 N but I am not sure where to put the negative and positive signs. Thanks for your help and explaination.

The best way is to draw the components with arrows going from the x-axis or y-axis and draw them to the vector. IF you draw this on a x-y axis graph, down is negative and left is negative.

In your case, -86.6 and -50.
