one hose from the radiator should be hot and one should be cooler..shows the radiator is working. u should just stick with the OEM thermostat. the dexcool is for newer gm vehicles. it wont hurt ur old engine. if u want better cooling use a less than 50/50 mix (coolant and water) basically add more distilled water. but u want ur engine running at the originally intended temperature. their car cant run cooler just by changing the fluid. unless the old stuff was so gunked up it hardly was flowing.

Check the water pump, too.

A friend told me that BMW used a plastic WP impeller in the mid-1990's 2.5L engines. It failed in his 325 around 90K miles, led to an overheated engine and was an expensive fix. The plastic impeller supposedly saved weight. I believe BMW switched back to a metal, or at least composite impeller for better reliability around 1999. If your WP has never been replaced, it's probably a good idea with 200K miles.

I wouldn't replace the thermostat with any other temp than OE (original equipment). As far as Dexcool....I would stay away! Prestone makes an extended life formula that is compatible with all makes and colors.

You need a med thermostat and stay with the green. If you put the orange in it with out getting all of the green out you will crystallize your thermostat and mess you car up.

You need to put the proper thermostat in to make sure the engine management system operates right.....keep the Ethel Glycol ( Green Stuff ) I haven't had such great luck with the stuff that's suppose to " mix " with the others. Hope I helped.

They were probable going to position in a water pump, once you receive it. continually remeber, take a drill and drill 5 holes interior the thermostat.once you fill it decrease back up with coolant the holes will vent the block.
