Premium gas is slightly higher octane, thats why you see the 87 89 91 number. It is made for higher performance engines, and higher end cars. It will give you maybe 1 more mile per gallon, possibly 2 but anyway it is not really different than the 87 or 89. Unless your car states it should be run on premium you don't have to spend the extra 20 cents a gallon. If you go to some gas stations you will see they have racing fuel, which is close to 100 octane, this would probably damage some cars cuase it burns hotter. But to put it in a nutshell, it is not worth buying unless it is stated in the owners manual to use it

Seems you already have good answers to your question but they are all right on the money. Its all about the octane, and thats a true fact. Your mileage or performance doesn't increase per-say. I have an older 95 Ford ranger and keep it truely maintain, oil changes and tune-ups and so on. I have tried the lower octane of 89 and dang was that a mistake , it ding and pinned and flattered until the gasoline was gone , move to 89 octane and did as it should, did the 91 octane and realized it was a waste of monies, so I stayed with the 89 octane. Looked it up on internet and found that 89 octane is what the factory wants you to use anyways. do whats best for you, hey if you live in Denver due to hight elevation you might need the 91 octane, whatever do what best for you auto !

I love my older truck cause its what I need, does the things that I like and what i need so that what it is !
take care and hope it all help you.

As a rule no, unless your car calls for it.
However I have found that when I get a "bad" tankful of gas
from the "Eats" type gas station, (They buy gas from vendors on sale)and the car runs poorly, I will at times fill up with Premium to burn out the wet gas from the tank. The other option is to buy additives for the gastank which end up costing as much.

Premium gasoline has additives to make it burn stronger and leave less residue. Some engines are set to use the better fuel.Premium fuel seems to make your engine stronger.

Unless your vehicle specifically calls for a higher octane gasonline, it is literally a waste of money. Your fuel system is calibrated to work on a specific octane.
