"Animal" is a Latin word used in legal and social terminology. Most of the terminology of the biological sciences is Greek. The Greek word for "Animal" is "Zoos" (pronounced Zoh-aws). Hence a scientist who studies animals is called a zoologist.

This is why we go to look at elephants and tigers at a Zoological Garden, or "Zoo" for short.
