My son is making PVC marshmallow shooters for his friends for Christmas and wants to paint them, and we didn't know if spray paint would be a good choice knowing they have to put their mouths on them to blow the marshallows out? Does anyone have any ideas of what to use that will be a safe choice, and also stick well to the PVC permanently without coming off on the hands and mouth? Do you think food coloring like dye would be a good choice? Considering easter eggs are colored and haven't hurt anyone?...lol Please help we are running out of time!!! Thanks for your help.

Krylon makes a new paint that is made for plastic called 'Fusion' or something like that. works well on PVC.. it will not rub off, but it does come off pretty easily with a sharp object/hard object.. I would not put it in my mouth though.

If you use Schedule 40 use some Carb and Choke cleaner to remove the glossy finish on the PVC. Just spray on and wipe off. probably a good idea to rinse also ;)

There is a spray paint made just for PVC. Most spray paints will just peel and flake off of PVC. I think krylon makes the PVC spray paint, check a Home Depot or Lowes. Food coloring will not do anything to PVC other than roll right off onto the floor or sink. PVC pipe is water-proof so any liquid will not work. The krylon spray paint is engineered to bond with the plastic. It's made for household use and is non-toxic.

any paint you buy for craft purposes that isn't heat cured isnt safe for eating off of. without the heat bonding the molecules don't fully fuse thus easily come off and are potentially toxic. if your going to be lighting the marshmallows, dont use PVC. PVC melts quickly and someone will burn thier mouth very badly. go to the dollar store and get some cheap shot glasses or juice glasses then go to the craft store and get some glass paint, the kind you have to bake, and use that to colour the glasses. be sure to read the labels though esp. with red colours. Red glazes and paints often have lead in them to get a bright colour and are not same for anything that will be eaten off of.

Don't use spray paint! its pretty toxic and a a bit messy to apply ...
your best bet would be to go to a craft store or art supply place you can get speciality paints in every colour which should only cost £4 or so
(a lot of paints wont stick on PVC -spray paint will flake)

good luck

How about using something else just where the mouth will go? Something like colored duct tape or electric tape, or something metal or glass that will fit there or be made to fit there, or even paper images decoupaged there (after sanding)?

Paint and PVC don't bond at all well.
