To my shame I have to admit I USED to rely on it quite a bit, until, many, many years ago, I was proven to be SO wrong.
I got back from America, (I'm in the Netherlands), and had a heavy suitcase with me.
From the airport I went home by train, and around me sat three businesslike looking men, and at the last minute a guy with shabby clothes, and greasy long hair in a ponytail, sat in the seat next to me.
I admit to holding my handbag close to me.....I didn't want to take any risks with a guy looking like that sitting next to me.
When the time came I had to get off the train, I struggled getting my suitcase in the right direction. (path in between seats were small, suitcase was huge)
ALL three businesslike looking men totally ignored my struggle, but NOT so the guy I didn't think too much of.
He got up immediately, not only pointed my suitcase in the right direction, but he got it out of the train on the platform as well, and then he reached out to help ME off the train.
He just said "Bye", and disappeared back in the train again....leaving me on that platform feeling very ashamed of myself. I've learned from that experience, and nowadays I only slightly judge people by their appearence. (some 15 %)
(I may get a violation for chatting now, but I just had to write this down to make myself clear)

to a certain extent I think we all do mostly because that is almost always the only thing we know about a person before we actually meet them. Personally, I give my eyes 50% and my ears the other 50, meaning I will usually try not to judge someone that much until I've heard them speak (even if it's not to me)

Only if they're scary-creepy looking. After tending bar for years, I never judge ordinary looking people by their appearance. Some people you can just tell ain't right in the head at a glance, but that's just a matter of self preservation! lol

not so much "judge" them, but more so steriotype them.

For example...if I see a gothic kid...I assume they listen to rock music and like the color black.

or

If I see someone dressed in their pajammas out in public, I assume that they don't care about their appearance, and probably didn't brush their teeth.
