I am so with you mine did not do a thing!! My daughter is 11 months now. How far along were you when you went in to have him?( dilated) I was an 8 so I can see why mine did not work!! If you were like a six or below I would think they should have tried to do one again. I would not worry about complications all that means is that you did it by yourself...You Go Girl!!!

I had that happen to me in a way when I finally got the epidural. (I tried going natural.) My problem had to do with me more than anything the anesthesiologist did- when I laid on my back, it cut off the tube supplying the medicine and the effect wore off. Turning onto my side helped return the flow. Perhaps the same happened to you?
As for other complications- the fact is if the anesthesiologist messed up somehow, the complications would have been apparent right away. When the doc was putting in my epidural needle, it slipped a little, and actually ended up being kind of a spinal, too. They told me right away, and I was on special watch until the needle was removed- which I had to wait an extra day for to give the spot time to swell. If they hadn't let it swell, it would have leaked fluid and I could have gotten one of those spinal headaches. Luckily, everything went a-ok.

If it didn't work, then it sounds like they probably did mess up. I had a C-Section with my son, and they gave me an epidural - they literally poked me in the back 14 times with the needle, and it hurt more than anything I've ever felt before! I don't know about all of the different complications that can come from having one, but for about the first 3 & 1/2 years after I had my son(he's 5 now), I had really bad headaches, and I've had problems with my back hurting, and becoming stiff very easily ever since. It's a BIG pain, but it was worth it for my baby!

wow! So glad u asked this!!!!!!!!!! I got an epidural, and it wore off entirely after 14 hrs of labor.... so the last 4 hrs of it, I had nothing... they tried to replace it, that still didn't do a thing! My doctor told me they'd have to get a specialist in to look at my spine next time! Anyways, my spinal epidural didn' t work for my c-section, so I had to be put under.... I thought it was very odd, because my cousin had told me how epidurals were heaven! ugh, it was terribly painful!!! I wouldn't be worried about any other complications if you had him natural... with my c-section being put under, I had a metal taste in my mouth for over a week, and couldn't eat a thing because it all tasted awful. Other than that, I was just in a terrible amount of pain from the c-section.
Congrats on your new baby! They are worth all the pain!
I was 4cm when I got it, and around 9 when it stopped working and just about fullydilated when they took me c-section.

It has different effects. When I was giving birth to my son I had the epidural early. I couldn't walk after a while, when I really wanted to go to the bathroom. Labour didn't hurt and pushing also. When I was in labour with my daughter I had gotten the epidural late, the contraction went down a little bit, and it hurt to push. After 30 mins I walked around and has going to the bathroom and walking all over the hospital with my baby. When you are giving birth in a one to two hours, they don't give you that much. So it won't be passed onto the baby.

Um with mine they made my fiance (now husband) go away the room. And I needed to hug a nurse that I did not realize for relief. I wasn't too completely satisfied approximately it. But oh good. Anyways via that factor I used to be in SOO a lot to fairly consider them placing the epidural in.But after supply which used to be at 12:24 they stated they might be in in a while to take away the catheter from my again. Well they did not come till approximately 6 within the morning. It used to be enormously uncomfortable. And after they took it out it harm worse, or I spotted the anguish extra due to the fact that I wasnt in hard work anymore =D I consider the tremendous tape that's to your again is what harm while getting it eliminated. Overall it used to be pleasant even though. I received my epidural at 6 cm's I consider, and forty five mins after that (which that complete time I used to be in a position to nap) I used to be nine one million/two and close to in a position to provide. I recollect my hubby calling my moms and dads, who had simply left for McDonalds, to hurry again otherwise they have been going to overlook supply! It appeared find it irresistible helped pace alongside my hard work, however it should have simply been twist of fate!

Anesthetics work differently on different people. It's unfortunate that you had to deal with the discomfort of getting one and still had to feel the pain of natural child birth. I doubt the anesthesiologist messed up, I had one with my c-section and I didn't experience the "total numbness" that others talk about.
I wouldn't be worried about other complications. Enjoy your new little bundle of joy and if you do have questions or concerns, contact your obgyn.

How many cm were you dialated when you had the epidural? If you let the pain get unbearable it will never feel as if it working. All the side effects of one would have already shown themselves like paralisis

I had an epidural with my first child, and I felt that it was a waste. I thought I might as well have not had anything at all! With my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies, I had spinals.

mine didn't take on my right side. They ended up doing a csection, and had to eventually put me out, cuz I could feel them cutting. Epidurals are not an exact science
