does anyone know where i can buy non-dot approved helmets. all the dot approved helmets i came across other than Arai's have large volume to them. The difference in the sizing is just the changing of the inner paddings. I am short and skinny so normal helmets make me look like Rick Moranis in his Darth Vader helmet in Space Balls. I just want a helmet that doesn't look so big on me.

Simply not true. DOT and SNELL standards are designed to test for a completely different TYPE of impact. One is not better than the other...except in certain types of crashes. Tests tend to show that DOT helmets are safer and protect your noggin' on harder impacts, and SNELL helmets are better for glancing blows.

This is very informative article that requires your full attention and not just a skimming read, but it's well worth it.

My interests are more in two wheeled motorsports, except for NHRA/IHRA drag racing. NONE of the motorcycle sanctioning bodies that I have ever raced with have ever asked for anything other than DOT and/or SNELL rated. Further more, no one has ever checked my helmets. NONE of the local drag strips has ever checked my helmets for anything other than it was on my head, and the rule books don't specify anything other than "An approved saftey helmet that covers the top and sides of the head. No 'shorty' style helmets allowed".

To the original poster: What you are refering to is what the industry calls a novelty helmet. For the protection they provide you might as well shave your head and have a DOT or Snell seal tattooed to the back of your head. I have personally taken a normal claw hammer and droped it on one of these things and had it shatter. Not swung at it, not beat the ever loving $h!t out of it. Droped it.

Novelity helmets are obviously illegal in states with mandantory helmet laws, so a ticket could be forthcoming if you live in one of those states. They won't protect your head in the event of a fall, so really whats the point?

Remember the old BELL helmets slogan... If you've got a ten dollar head by a ten dollar helmet, if your head is worth more...

Different manufacturers make a lot of possibilities if you want to pay the price. They usually come in S, M. L. and XL. The national rating system is operated by the SNELL Corporation in the U.S. Motorcycle helmets have an M prefix in front of the date of approval by SNELL. DOT approved helmets are not the same quality as SNELL rated helmets. For any sport driving or competition events you would need a Snell rated helmet dated M-2000 or newer. Strange as it may seem the Automobile helmets are rated on a tougher evaluation schedule than motorcycle helmets.
You can find lessor helmets with no rating, at some Pep Boys, Wallmart, Kragen or Sporting Goods stores. It's your life we are talking about, unless you just want to impress some passers by.
Sometimes you can find a used helmet in a bulletin board or in a newspaper. Make sure, however, that it has not be involved in any kind of accident.

The only place I know of you can buy a NON-DOT helmet is Toys-R-Us.

That is because those are toys.

There are many styles of helmets to choose from, starting at full, to half helemts.

On a sportbike I like wearing a helmet and gear. It is safer and it looks really cool...while on the bike. Walk away from the bike with my gear and I look like a power ranger.

Get a good quality helmet; scimping on the DOT approved or not because it doesn't look cool is kinda a bad idea.

If your not going to get a helmet that protects your head why wear a helmet?

They actually do come in smaller sizes. Have you tried women's sizes? My wife's is smaller than mine. Or a youth size? Our daughter's is smaller than both of ours. Perhaps a youth helmet in large would do it for you.

You should not pick a non-approved helmet. They can be worse than none at all in an accident.

I don't always wear one, most times I choose to go without. I would never wear one that won't do the job when I want it.

Who cares what you look like when you're riding anyway? You take it off when you get where you're going, right? I do.

Honestly i wouldnt go with a non dot approved helmet. your life would be in risk in the event of an accident. Look for a helmet with proper sizing for your head.

If you're not going to buy a DOT helmet, why not just go with a bandanna or ball cap? Check out some
dot approved half shells and shorties.

Defense dictates that you simply must placed on a helmet whilst driving a motorbike; your rationale happens to require that you simply placed on corrective eyewear. So are you ready to readily positioned for your common glasses underneath your motorbike helmet? Very most likely, relying on in which you travel…although it's neither an easy procedure nor a reliable one.
