I need to know what happens when slufluric acid is placed, in a small amount, on a plastic item, a metal item, a paper napkin & a meat item. I also need to know what happens if you dilute the acid which is on each object with a small amount of water. Can any one help me out?? thanks!

ok, thanks to the answers, but i also need to know what would happen with a lead pencil & sulfuric acid.

Funny, my text book tells me to add the water after the sulfuric acid is already on the object. Anyway.

Thanks for all these answers ppl!

Sulfuric acid on the metal item will react strongly producing hydrogen and a sulfide of the metal. In time just eating it away. On paper it will react with the moisture in the paper producing heat which will blacken or char the paper disintegrating it eventually. The same on meat the reaction with the water will produce heat and burn it, as you will find out if you're not careful and get any on you. On the plastic item it probably won't react but there is a lot of differences in plastics so you should be careful. On the second part of your question, let me start by saying that you should NEVER add water to the acid it would splatter and diffuse acid vapors into the air as well as get very hot. To dilute sulfuric acid add the acid to the water. On your plastic item adding water to the acid would probably melt the plastic. After the initial heat reaction on all the items the diluted acid would have less reaction on each item.

1. plastic item: burn right thru (follows everyone stereotype of an acid)
2. Metal: this acid bruns through most common metals
3. Paper: Burns through
4. Meat Item: Burns thru
5. Water: Sulfuric acid when mixed with water makes aresol which is extremely flammable

in this reaction it acts as a catalyst. Acetic acid is ethanoic acid (carboxylic acid)..this plus the alcohol wil produce the ester the sulfuric acid only quickens the reaction by reducing the activation power.
