Don't let the GRE freak you out too much. It used to not be that bad. I do hear you have to write now. That's a bummer. I did good enough to get into grad school and finished my M.S. and PhD, and I don't think I'm the brightest person by any stretch of the imagination. Relax and good luck.

The GRE requirement is not usually an institutional issue but an issue for a major. Departments decide if you need to take the GRE or not for admission. I am a graduate student without having taken the GRE. If I decide to go on to my PhD then I will have to take the GRE again (I took it 7 years ago but that score is too old to use). Some schools (The University of Illinois for one) are starting to do away with it because research shows the GRE score absolutely has nothing to do with how well someone does in school. Many universities have admitted students with above average GPA's and low GRE scores and found they are as successful as those with above average GPA and high GRE scores.
I would say in a few years most GRE requirements will be relaxed or done away with.

Any credible grad program will require a GRE or MAT. MAT is typically for more social science focused graduate programs, but to me, they were just as difficult. I took both, and found the GRE's easier to study for. Schools will also look at your grades, etc. as well, so don't sweat it too much!

I don't know of any grad schools that don't require at least the general GRE, and many require subject tests as well. If you can't pass the GRE, are you really ready for grad school?

I would say 95% of graduate schools require it. All you have to do is find that 5%!
