Is there a reason we have the habits we do??

I want to know why I have the habit of smelling my hair ALL the freakin time!!!! It is sooo addictive. Everyone makes fun of me when i do it but i cant help it! My friends have even picked up the habit!!!!

You probably have more habits that you probably aren't aware of.
Behavioural habits are developed over time.
We develop these types of behaviours often as a response to cope with things we may find troubling in our external environment.
If smelling your hair makes you feels good then the action most likely triggers a chemical reaction in your brain which in turn causes a brief feeling of euphoria.
A temporary distraction to take mind off whatever it may have been focusing on at the time.

Maybe it just smells good. I have the habbit of running my hands through my hair like a barber. I guess cause I have a little left that I miss it

It can be visual stimulus like watching and learning from others,
sometimes habits are based on nervous tension.

the same reason you would use a template for a web page. does your brain want to figure something out new EVERY SINGLE TIME? i think not. so it creates patterns, set ways of doing things. it's hard to change them once they're ingrained, but entirely possible.

do your parents do that? we often pick up habits we see when we are very little. i have noticed that like my mom, when i am sitting somewhere i tend to twiddle my thumbs, i think it is inherited because i have also seen my grandfather do the same thing.
