Disney is notorious for taking a dark story that is well known and changing it around for a happy ending for kid friendly money.
most of the Disney movies are Americana versions based on the Brothers' Grimm Fairy Tales and a few of the Hans Christian Anderson Tales. All of those stories were about how good people got rewarded through their patience and virtue and the vile people were bound for a poets hell.
The Little Mermaid was a tale that taught the lessen that if you make one sided deals with the devil, the devil will find a way to win, in the movie daddy came to bail her out of mortal danger.
Beauty and the beast had quite abit more story to it when Belle wanted to go back to the Beast. It was not a lovey dovey romance of free will and thought. It was a moral story about doing what is right instead of what is easy.
And Cinderella, don't even get me started on the Cinderash stories. Ravens plucks out the evil step sisters eyes at the end. (sorry if I ruined that for ya')
I see Disney's reasoning to change the ending around, but still. I get hurt everytime I watch the cartoon movies and see how the good guys always find the easy way out.

For the true legends behind the movies on the fairytales, get a "grown up" version of Grimms Fairy Tales. Also, read the original stories by Hans Christian Anderson for tales of "The LIttle Mermaid" and "The Little Matchgirl" and "Thumbellina". There are many other examples...just go to the local library and pick up anthologies of legends from different cultures. Disney basically took the movies from the watered-down versions that had been told to children for years, sometimes centuries. Read "Peter Pan" and "Alice in Wonderland" for yourself...they are actually adult books that were rewritten for children.

Disney was one of the first companies to offer their employees 'domestic partner' benefits. This really pissed off the Christian right. Then they started having special gay-friendly events at Disneyland, which made the Christians even angrier. They declared a boycott on Disneyland, which was unsuccessful. (Ever notice that boycotts never work for the Right? 8^) ). It was about this time that all the rumors started popping up. Disney makes hundreds of millions a year from safe, family-oriented films and videos. Why would they jeopardize that by putting stuff about sex into them?

Little Mermaid- she dies in the end.
Snow White- did more than cooking and cleaning.
Rapunzel- supposedly was giving birth in the tower.
Little Red Riding Hood- she was a bit older and the wolf a little less hairy.
Cinderella- the sisters each cut off a piece of their foot to fit in the shoe.
I can't think of any more right now.

Most of the original legends that were written were to deemed to violent to be read by Good American Christians. If there was not a sanitized rewrite available Disney did their own rewriting so they could be shown to American audiences.
