I love how you begin the question with "Should I waste my time?"
The answer to that is no, you should never do something if it would be a waste of time.
But in this case, I don't think a present for an old friend would be a waste.
I think it might do some good, it may bring you closer like you used to be.

if he doesn't make the effort, but you would like to continue talking, just get him a nice, cheap gift. this will show that you still care, but it will make you feel better about not wasting any money

I'd wait and let him make the next move. It seems you are the only one doing anything to hang onto this friendship and it's not fair to you. If he doesn't he's the one who's going to miss out on having you as a friend. ;o)

If I were you, I would try to find out what's going on with him. If you still care about him, then that would seem like the logical thing to do.

i think you should still get your friend a present. i mean you guys were once good friends right? im pretty sure that he will greatly appreciate your gift and maybe you guys can even try to mend your friendship.

Get him something that lets him know that you still want to be friends. Like if you two had a joke that was just between you two then get him something to represent that. ;)
Good Luck!

If it's so obvious that he dosen't need or think about you then the answer to your problem should be equally obvious.

Well if you aren't appreciated then don't go that extra mile just to be treated like dirt. besides, anser this, would he buy you a gift?
