There for awhile, the big bang proponents suspected there would also be a "big crunch" since it was thought that gravity would eventually pull everything back in. Later, it seems that there is insufficient matter we know about to slow down the expansion of the universe. Lately, there has been much talk about the expansion of the universe actually accellerating. If true, then there would never be an end to the universe. It would eventually cool off and die out, with no atomic or quantum processes occuring.
