I have heard you can measure how much light one's indoor plants are receiving by the shadow of my hand held in front of them.. Is this true and if so what would the shadow tell you? If not how could I measure the light?

If the shadow has a very sharp outline it means your are getting more light than if you have a "soft" shadow. The actual amounts of light cannot be ascertained by this method. Only "one" light relative to "another" light. If you are really interested in measuring the light so you have actual readings go to a good L&G Center and buy a light meter. We sell them for less that 20 bucks and they are fairly accurate.
If you want to really get absolutely accurate you can go to a camera shop and spend several times for a light meter what you would at the garden store. The plants aren't that specific so get the cheap one.
