What should I look out for to verify the authenticity of a Louis Vuitton Bag? Especially when bought over the internet?

I used to work at LAX and the customs officers there would confiscate fake bags, and one of the easiest ways to tell is to look at the quality of the sewing in the inside of the bag, because a real Louis Vuitton bag will be flawless...

How to Tell if Your Louis Vuitton is Fake
February 08, 2006

Many unsuspecting budget fashionistas spend up to $1000 on "authentic" LV bags that turn out to be fakes. Before purchasing your bag, read these basic rules to determine whether or not it is fake.

1. If it claims to be "brand new" and costs less than $300, most likely it is fake.

2. If the "LV" logo is upright on both sides, it might be a fake.

3. If it's "brand new" and being sold on eBay or Yahoo! Auctions, there is a good chance it's fake.

4. If the piping is not leather, it is fake

5. If the seams are uneven, frayed, the monogram is off or the bag is poorly sewn, it is definitely fake.

6. If there is no date code (a.k.a date number) provided or if the seller is reluctant to provide a date code or receipt, it could be fake.

7. If it's a new bag and the bag's handle is a different color leather than that of the piping, it's fake.

8. If the seller doesn't allow returns, most likely it's fake.

9. If you bought it in your local Chinatown or from a street vendor, it's fake.

10. If the dust cover has rounded edges and/or it doesn't come with a dust cover, it's fake.

11. If the bag has a hanging tag (of any type) or a bright yellow tag or envelope, it's definitely a fake.

12. If you bought the bag on an ecommerce site other than eluxury.com (be careful of eBay), it's fake.

For more information on how to tell the authenticity of your Louis Vuitton bag, visit an authorized Louis Vuitton retailer (Neiman Marcus or a boutique at your local high-end mall), call the Louis Vuitton headquarters at (212) 758-8877 or visit mypoupette.com a site dedicated to the promotion of real LV bags.

** TBF Note: I have no opinion one way or the other on the whole fake bag issue. However, most people assume if you're carrying a Louis Vuitton Monogram Canvas, it's a fake. So why bother purchasing the fake OR the real thing? My advice: head to the nearest Loehmanns, Marshalls, Off Fifth, Saks Fifth Avenue, or Last Call Neiman Marcus, purchase a real, high quality bag (Coach, Marc Jacobs, Longchmap, Cole Haan) for cheap and put the money you save into your retirement account. **

Hi, there are a few things to look out for:

- Price: LV bags dun drop in price drastically.. if it is CHEAP, then it is FAKE

- the production number (but that is easily found in fakes as well)

- stitching.. REAL LV bags dun have yellow stitching

- close up picture of the bag as compared to the real thing in the LV website or eluxury.com.. if it doesnt look exactly the same, then there is a chance it is a fake. Real LV bags have the exact same print for all the bags of the same

- would be good to request for a reciept ;)

PS: Real bags dun have registration certs.. those are fake

Believe me or not. There is NO way to differential the authenticity of LV bag!

Infact, high class shop selling LV bag could be fake! It's true! I personally knew a Thai-Chinese filthy rich businessman who make fake high-class top end bag for export!

Hah... he was telling me that don't think that shop sale staffs know about the authencity. They do not know all! He make everything the same and nobody can tell.

The bottom line is NO way you can tell. Trust me!

Inside the bag there should be a label that says it is a Louis Vutton bag, check really well to make sure it doesnt say something like Louis Vutton copy . also just check the overall quality of the bag

also, the thread on real lv bags is not that bright yellow like on the fake ones. fake ones are always plastic, which may be difficult to tell online. don't order from hong kong if you're getting it on ebay.

Smell the handle.
It should smell leather-ish.Since the bag it self is man made leather..then you should smell the handle.
