Low self esteem and sometimes people like to talk about others just to hear themselves and think there comments are important.
Quite often they same something about someone and later think "Oh maybe I shouldn't have said that" sort of the old foot in the mouth routine. But later you will hear them repeat the same story again to someone else. That is because they want others to think what they have to say is important and they want to hear themselves.

I see you have received the usual social science knee-jerk answers about the " softest " concept in psychology; self-esteem. Did you ever think that it might be too high of self-esteem? Apparently, this is what they have found at Case Western Reserve. This seems to be the modus operandi for many people. Psychology needs to get out of these " feel good "ruts and back into scientific research.

Pretty much, yes, it is low self-esteem. Most people who do that are cowards anyway and the only way to make themselves feel important and better about themselves is to put others down. That is the whole root of abuse.

Low self esteem is what I think. To make themselves seem better than they are, or better than other people. Or because they have been put down by thier parents or someone they looked up to.

When people are insecure about themselves they feel the need to be superior to others. Some take this to more extremes than others. The need for superiority does come from low self-esteem, it is how people establish their dominance in any given stiuation. The best way to deal with someone who is displaying this behavior is to ignore them to the point that they realize that they cannot establish dominance over you b/c you won't let them.

it could be. i have this problem but don't find myself in the low-self estem system. i hate it when i do so, the good thing is i realize what i'm doing is not ok and catch myself, so i try to watch over my words. some people find them self's as being a loser and feel they need to put others down to feel better . i do it out of fustration and don't have patience towards my 7 yr. old. prey for us people! some people want to show off by putting others down, but actually they are looking stupid, putting them self's down.

It is the saddest level of low self esteem. They seek to elevate themselves by putting others down. If the victim of their put downs is not secure, the cycle of low self esteem is perpetuated.

People who put others down usually have very low self-esteem. Putting someone down makes them feel in control and gives them a sense of power, especially if they think or have a sense that their 'tactic' is effective........... so how to avoid such predators..... be strooooong even when you're weak

Probably deals with self-esteem and jealousy somewhat. It makes people feel better to knock the ones around them down. Then they don't seem better.

Those people have very low-self esteem. They have psychosomatic illness. You should avoid those kind of people because they can pull you down as quick as wink of an eye.
