...but I don't know how to get my mom to agree to let me. I asked her several years ago and she said no (adamantly). She thinks it's too risky - that I'll get infections or whatnot. How can I convince her to change her mind?

If she is worried about infection, that makes me wonder if you have or have had in the past a condition that might have weakened you immune system and are not telling us about it.

I had my ears peirced when I was 8. We were always instructed to dab a little campho phenique on the area a couple of times each day, and to twist the earrings around a couple of times a day, for a few weeks. This prevented serious infection.

If you can't change your moms mind with reasoning, then just try to get clamp on earrings. They make them, and you don't have to get your ears pierced to wear them. I can't provide you with a link, but you could find some on google, easily enough.

Good luck to you.

Ear piercing is by no means risky. The worse thing that can happen is that it gets badly infected, and even then you can just take the earring out and the hole will close, but this doesn't happen often and won't if you take proper care of it. Think about it, some people get their baby's ears pierced to get it over with. I have an aunt that did it that way. I have two holes in each of my ears and they never caused me any problems. One of them got a little infected right after I did it, but cleaning it well and putting alcohol on it got rid of the problem. Do some research and use the facts given to you in our answers and have a calm, reasonable talk with your mother about it.

Does your mom have hers peirced? If she does I would point that out and wonder whats the difference. Most dont get infections, especially if you dont use cheap earrings and clean them everyday. I have three holes in each ear plus my cartilage. The only time I ever have a problem is when I use cheap earrings. Its really not that bad, it only inches and gets red... so you really dont have to worry that much. Almost everyone has a hole or two, plus some have them in strange places, so its honestly not that risky. I really dont know why she wouldnt let you, its nothing. Maybe shes had a bad experience or heard stories?

first of all how old are you? does she have a reason why she doesn't want you to? I had friends who had to wait until they were 16. as for infections it depends on how you take of them and if you have metal allergies. I've had mine done since I was a couple of weeks old and have never had a problem. neither has my 8yr old. but my 6 year old has to wear hoops or hooks that are at least 14 kt or nickel free. anything that touches the back of her ear starts an infection I had go change out the peircing studs with some that were hoops to let them heal. if they get infected before they heal don't take out the earing or you won't be able to get it back in. I never cared for the solution they gave me for my second set of holes or the girls so I usually cleaned ours with alchohol or peroxide. you can always ask her to talk to your doctor and ask him the risks

it truly is in common words a piercing, won't be able to you wait till your 16? you need to damage you moms and dads emotions in case you bypass in the back of their backs. No i doesn't damage. there is extra of a probability of your ears getting contaminated in case you get it pierced with a gun, it truly is perfect to get it done with a needle (scary i understand) even with the undeniable fact that it quite doesn't damage, for a split second it hurts a tiny bit yet then the ear is going numb. Gok Wan has stretched ear lobes, so except your planning to stretch your ears, i'd bypass for the stud. good luck on even with you be sure.

You don't say how old you are but maybe she thinks you wouldn't take good care of it during the healing process. I let my sons get their ear pierced when they were ten.

My mom didn't let me get my ears pierced until I was 14 because she said she didn't want me blaming her for letting me get holes in my ears if I changed my mind. Yet this is the same mom who let me get a tattoo when I was 17 and she even went with me!

well, you could try explaining to her that you understand how to care for your ears once they are pierced. tell her that you plan to clean them several times a day to reduce the chance of infection. you also need to turn the earrings a couple of times a day. your mom is just looking out for you - you could also tell her that if you do get an infection, you'll keep the earrings out until it clears up. good luck!

tell her that if you go somewhere where they have certified and sanitized professionals and professional equipment [not Claire's.. maybe a Merle Norman?] that everything is sanitzed after each use, all the earing are seperately packaged in sealed containers. not only that, but you get special cleanser that you put on your ears every day to keep them un-infected. if she still doesn't go for it, tell her you'll just pierce them yourself with a burnt needle. :]

my mom was the same way. she wouldn not let me get my ears pierced! she had to have surgery cause she got such a bad infection she got cyst pack in her ears and had to have them removed due to a bad allergic reaction.

i got my first piercings when i was 15. they got infected, (cause i didnt clean them) and took them out a week early. i had a cyst pack but decided to let them close up and wait till the cyst went away/if it did. it ended up going away and i got them repierced.

just tell her if you do better in school if you can get them done as a gift. you shodl get them done by a professional at at tattoo/pierce studio. since the places in the mall (the piercing guns are not sanitary) at the pierce shop they will use a hollow needle. trust me IM TERRIFIED OF NEEDLES and they arent that bad! they sound hideous but trust me its WAY better than gettign them done with a gun!! i have 8 piercings all together. i got my 2 lower loves done with a gun (i regret it, they look horrible and i need to get them redone) and i got my 3 cartilage piuercings and navel done with a needle.

so talk to her abotu going to a tatto parlor! yes people have alot of tattoos and iercings!! i was 16 when i frist went in one to get my cartilage pierced and dont be intimidated by them, they are really nice. my mom didnt wantt o look at them but she ended up having a long conversation with the piercer who was going to pierce my ears abotu his fish tank that was set up out front lololol they are all really nice!

you take a look at this!
Is ear piercing at a mall safe?
In the past, ear piercing booths at malls used guns that could not be properly sterilized and could easily spread diseases like hepatitis (and did). At this point, most piercing booths are using disposable tools that have far less potential for spreading disease; however, it is still possible, if the staff doesn't have a solid understanding of the issues involved (in the same way that a modern firearm is less likely to blow up in the shooter's hand, but people still do get hurt by guns).
In addition, most industry professionals and piercing gun manufacturers agree that ear piercing studs are not appropriate jewelry, especially for anything other than earlobes due to their short length (which means they cannot properly compensate for swelling) and dull point (which means additional damage during the piercing may be done).
Realistically, if you get your ears pierced at the mall, you're probably going to be just fine. It's just not the best way to do it.

Is piercing at a piercing studio safe?
If you go to the effort to seek out a quality piercing studios, they will practice levels of sterility control similar to what your dentist uses. Anything that the client comes in contact with is either single use (for example, the needles), or can be sterilized in an on-premises autoclave. In addition, they will take care to not contaminate any of these items either during or before the procedure.
Finally, while ear piercing booths at a mall tend to have a few hours of training, most piercers serve an apprenticeship of a year or more, and many of the better ones will also have additional training such as recognized blood-borne pathogen courses, CPR, and other medical skills.
