They were not farmers or business men, really. They had money in the bank, and they lived off of the interest. It's what all "gentlemen" did back then. You did not work unless you were lower class. In the book, do you remember when it says that Mr. Darcy has $10,000 year? That means that he draws that much money in interest from his principal amount in the bank. The thing is, though, $10,000 was literally like a million dollars back then, so it's quite wealthy. Especially when you consider that they didn't really have a lot of bills to pay. As for Jane's personality ... have you never known someone who was different from their family? I know I have.

they get all there money from what they grow on there land and sell it. kind of like farming also most of the money that darcy has is from the rent he gets from the land that he rents out.
