Are US airports owned by private companies or by the federal government? And if they're privately owned, how much federal assistance do the private owners get? Any links would be greatly appreciated.

The major commercial airports in the USA are for the most part owned and operated by the city, county or municipality in which they are located ie. in some way, by a non federal government entity. They are of course subject to FAA regulation.

There are numerous smaller private airports, which typically see little in the way of commercial air passenger traffic. They are owned by corporations in most cases. Again, they are subject to FAA regulation.

Yes, most are owned and maintained by the local municipality or state governement. However, the federal government often times funds the airport improvements which contractually obligates the municipality to operate for an extended period of time.
