ALSO, many people are making the correction as "IT SHOWED" which is incorrect because when you write about art and literature, you speak of it in the present tense. The reaction of southerners who read it at the time, however, should be spoken of in this past. You already seem to have figured this out, however.

instead of "This makes Tom appear to be human" try, "His willingness to give his life for the others showed to one and all that Tom was indeed human." Try "that Mr. Shelby was more than their master, he was their benefactor." If you leave it as is remove the "the" in front of Mr. Shelby. Here's a suggestion for a closing statement.

The Southerner's efforts to depict the slaves as less than human and happy in their servitude could not stand up to the truth of Tom's willing sacrifice, the truth that he and the other slaves were truly human.
