Because, like Count Dracula, they are true vampires and cannot survive in the sunlight. Further, it's so much more romantic to make contacts by candlelight!

You've seen their enormous eyes so you should realise they are not very keen on strong light. They also think we are much nicer when we are asleep because our loud voices upset their sensitive ears and they don't have to listen to our constant whining and bickering. I think they don't like us very much.
