because with the Base that controls the entrance to the Mediterranean, and the newly opened Suez Canal, Britian was able to controls the gateway from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. this also allowed a faster sea route to Britian's colonies (India and Australia)

it then became a stratigic point in WWII, in which Germany tried to take the Island in Operation Felix. it failed because the Spanish did not cooperate as well.
