a roman standard was what the troops would carry into battle it would normally be a sign with the legions name on it along with it's symbol of the legion and where it had been and at the very top it would have a golden eagle to signify Rome the most famous of this was the egale with the name SPQR on it The letters stand for senatus populusque romanus. but it was like a unit flag today
