1st, being a pedophile and being gay are 2 separate things. people are always making that mistake! most pedophiles are heterosexual. 2nd, I've never understood why priests aren't allowed to marry, and yet they counsel married couples? now, how can they counsel anyone on something they are forbidden to do?

Its not double standard. First of all the issue of gay marriage or homosexuality is more on Church doctrine while the issue of pedophile priests is more of a Church administrative problem or how the Church is managed.

I know of Catholic priests who are dedicated to their job and does it well. However there are also those who are as rotten as hell and should be expelled from the church. However problem lies also with the Catholic church. They are too slow to act on these sex offenders and sometimes shield them from authorities. I am no longer a Catholic but it would be a shame that the 2,000 year old Catholic church will be destroyed by these few corrupted priests. And in fairness to the Catholic Church, there are other Christian churches now encountering similar problems. If I am not mistaken last month an American Minister from an influential Evangelical church, who ironically advocated against gay marriage stepped down. It was revealed he hired a male prostitute to have sex.

As for gay marriage and homosexuality, I do not expect any changes at all, unless Jesus Christ will descend from the heavens and rewrite the Bible to allow sexual acts among men to men and women to women.

As others have said, there's a difference between pedophilia and homosexuality. That out of the way...

Look at their doctrine. The priest is called to a life of chastity; so are pedophiles and homosexuals (at least according to most interpretations of catholic dogma.) All others are called to be fruitful and multiply (that is, have lots of kids.)

Now, imagine you're a pedophile or homosexual men raised in a catholic environment. You're not interested in adult women at all. Might you not think this was a 'sign from God' that your calling was to the priesthood; or that you might hide in the priesthood where your non-attraction to women would be seen as a blessing, rather than as a sign there was something "wrong" with you?

Oh, and for the record, most of the scandal regarding the catholics wasn't that they had a few pedophiles in the ranks; these things, horrible as they are, happen. The problem was that instead of doing something about the perpretrators, they covered it up and let it keep happening.

Second, the Catholic Church and its beloved Pope have major hang-ups about sex (hence, IMHO, why so many of their priests end up as perverts). "Gay marriage" means the blessing of a union involving two people of the same gender who (presumably) are having sex that will *not* result in procreation, but will result in a lot of fun.
