I wouldn't necessarily call what he says "truths". They are his opinions and beliefs passed down from his anti-semitic father. There's a part of me that believes the old saying "any publicity is good publicity". With his behavior, he may be drumming up more film watchers who just want to see what Apocalypto is all about. It's not really appealing on its own (it's not a flashy action movie and I really don't know what it's about) but the thought of controversy may make people see it.

You can't foresee controversy, therefore you can't create it in an artistic sense. Controversy is something that happens 'after the fact'. The reasons for doing the films have nothing to do with being controversial. That was just what became of them when they hit the public tone. And besides, isn't most all history controversial anyways? The earth is flat. The earth is round. blah blah blah
